My dad & brother run tandem heavy trucks. The general feeling is that synthetic oils are preferred for transmissions and differentials, but conventional engine oil changed at regular intervals is the way to go in the motors. Most heavy trucks come from the factory now with synthetic lubes except in the engine. My ‘94 has been relatively trouble free thanks in a great part to dr. bob & this NG. Watch for oil leaks at the valve covers and a loose intake manifold if you get pinging, oil loss, and fouled spark plugs. You can still get the trouble codes for the engine and ABS via "flash codes" from jumpering the diagnostic connectors. Contrary to what’s on the air intake, I use a bit of Gumout (spairingly) to clean the throttle plate if I get a sticky gas pedal. Mike
Response:
Anyone with information about the engine in the 1994 explorer? Like is the engine block and/or the heads cast iron or aluminum. Does anyone have a suggestion about synthetic oil – I’d like to use it if it will reduce engine wear but I don’t know anything about it except that it costs $3.99 per quart vs $1.39 per quart for regular oil. Thanks for advice. Also: to Dr Bob: thanks for the previous information you sent me about my suspension improvement question – I hope you’ll let me know if that "beta" kit works out well and when it become available. Dennis
