Explorer Rear End Ratios
Question:
Hi – I’ve got a ‘92 Explorer and trying to determine which rear-end it has. I found a tag on the rear-end but none of the numbers seem to be the ratio. Help !?! Thanks a bunch, Whit
Response:
This is how it is in my 95, so I dont konw if things are still the same. Open the drivers door. Somewhere around the latch, there is a big white label with a few barcodes on it. Near the bottom of this label there are a few groups of numbers. One of these is labeled "axle." If you have access to teh owners manual for this particular vehicle, you can check it out there. If not, I can check in mine and see if things are still the same. — "It’s not what you are, but what you don’t become that hurts" –Oscar Levant "Dawn: The time when people of reason go to bed" –Anonymous Matthew Maynard

Hi Matthew, thanks for the response. I’ve got the same label – "D4" axle, but can’t find a list for decoding it. If you’ve got info that says what D4 means, I’d sure appreciate it. Thanks, Whit
Response:
On the 1994 Explorer, D4 stands for a 3.73 Limited-slip differential. Since this part of the truck hasn’t really changed in the last few years, it’s safe to assume that this the same axle. — Jeffrey L.
