Morning Staring Problem
Question:
I’ve had the same type of problem on my 1994 Explorer. It’s happened about 6 times in the last 2 years. It happened this week again. Normally waiting 20-30 minutes fixes the problem. This time I was able to check a few things while it wouldn’t start. After fiddling with the fuel pump relay the car started immediately, so I’ve switched the fuel pump and heater blower relays and hope that the heater blower stops working occasionally – otherwise its back to the drawing board. Hope this helps Chris H – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Yah, I’ve started to experience this on my brand-spankin’ > new 99 Sport (3400 miles). I don’t think it is the relay. I always hear the fuel pump start when I first turn the key on. The funny thing is that it always starts on the 2nd try. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I’ve had the same type of problem on my 1994 Explorer. Yah, I’ve started to experience this on my brand-spankin’ new 99 Sport (3400 miles). Going into the dealer next week. They suspect fuel line pressure problem. The problem seems to be going away now, though, after about a week or two. Is it because the weather’s getting warmer? Was it a bad tank of gas? Not sure. Turning the key & waiting for the fuel line to pressurize before cranking did not seem to help. I’ll followup if the dealer finds out anything useful. Huh, damndest thing. For the last 300 miles or so I’ve been able to start successfully on the first attempt for 100% of all attempts. I’ve been running on 87 octane from BP. The previous few tanks had consisted of the methanol-laden salad oil from the local AM/PM. Should that’ve been a problem? Is this symptomatic of a problem in the engine? Have I damaged anything by running the salad oil? E. (Not sure if I’ll go to the dealer – appointment on Wed. Big pain in the ass) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I don’t think it is the relay. I always hear the fuel pump start when I > first turn the key on. I have tried that. It seems I have to wait about 10-15 seconds before turning the crank. The guy at the texaco station thinks it may be the start of fuel pump going bad. But right now it still puts out 37psi pressure and he doesn’t think I should change it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I have the same problem, this just started after receiving a wonderful tank >of BAD gas! gordon veh maybe loosing fuel press after sitting after cycling key twice enough press has been supplied to fuel rail to supply injectors, also could be as simple as dirty throttle body are idle air control motor.
Response:
sounds like a fuel pressure problem…. throttle body normally you will have a poor idle but it will start. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > gordon > veh maybe loosing fuel press after sitting after cycling key twice enough press > has been supplied to fuel rail to supply injectors, also could be as simple as > dirty throttle body are idle air control motor.

I have the same problem, this just started after receiving a wonderful tank of BAD gas! I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it. What I do is turn the ignition on, just the key don’t start the truck and wait a second for the fuel to pressurize and then try starting you’ll get her to start on the 1st try! But, if you find out any info Please let me know ! Thx ToneDog

Just recently when I try to start my 92 xlt in the morning I have to turn on the ignition switch twice. The first time the engine turns over and seems like it wants to start but doesn’t. I turn it off and then the second time it fires right up. This happens only in the morning or after not starting it for a long time like 8 or more hours. I recently had the spark plugs and fuel filter replaced. Any insight would be appreciated.

I have a 91 EB that does the same thing. If anyone has the answer could you let me know as well? Thanks in advance.
