Transmission shift linkage
Question:
I have a 1996 Explorer and read in the service manual about lubricating the transmission shift linkage. My question is where is the shift linkage, where on the linkage should be lubricated, and what kind of lubrication should be used? Thank you in advance, Richard
Response:
Crawl under from the drivers side. In line with the front of the drivers door, on the side of the tranny facing you, you should see a cable & rod attached to a lever. Need to lubercate the joint where the rod attaches to the lever. Even easier if your on flat ground, with the e-brake set & wheels chocked, & you have someone work the shift lever. I use a Silicone lubercating compound from my local NAPA store. I think it was $5 a tube, also good for lots of other places on your ’splorer. I think there may be a kickdown lever on some older models. The 5sp auto on my ‘97 doesn’t seem to have one.
