'97 Explorer Problems

Question:

I’ve got a 2000 Explorer and it has "ticked" from day one (on initial startup).  Could this be the cam tensioner too?  I’ve asked the dealer about it and they assure me it’s "normal".  (See my other string about my sucky dealer experiences).

Response:

The most likely cause of the "ticking" sound is going to be the timing belt tensioner problem. I have had this problem and it cost about $350 to get fixed, however I have heard of it being much more,. But if you have the extended warranty, hopefully it will be no cost to you! Peyton

the engine noise has been covered here many time under cam tensioners or something like that.. it’s pretty serious (or can be) and probably needs to be fixed.. from my understanding it’s about $600-800 if you have to pay for the whole thing.. there’s a TSB on the matter. Hi all – I recently picked up a ‘97 2 dr. xlt with 46,000 miles on it (SOHC V-6).  All was well when I was test driving the car, but after driving it home (200+ miles), I noticed a few things…  The first thing is that after the engine is shut off and restarted, it has a rather loud "ticking" sound. The logical assumption is that it’s the lifters clicking while they wait for the oil to rise up to the top part of the engine.  However, I’m sure that it didn’t make this sound off of the assembly line.  Is there a way that the local dealer can make some adjustments to eliminate this sound?  The second thing is more disconcerting…  when I turn the heat on, there’s a little round plate on the front of the a/c & climate control flywheel that spins and then stops abruptly.  It really makes a loud clicking sound as it does this! What do you think is wrong with it?  I bought the car from a family relative and I paid $50.00 for the extended warranty to be switched into my name, so I think that it’s not going to hurt too much financially for any repairs that have to be made.  Thanks in advance! Before you buy.
