Automagic Tranny Engagement 2000

Question:

My 2000 Explorer with 13,000 miles on the drivetrain is slow to engage when first put into reverse from a cold start.  Just wondering if this is typical of the Explorer 5 speed Auto O/D transmission. Anyone else out there experience this type of situation????  Is this a disaster just waiting to happen.  Your input to the group is appreciated.

Response:

A "slow to engage….from a cold start" transmission usually means the seals are worn out and fluid is bypassing the seal until the seal heats up and expands and seals once again. You have to pull the transmission, disassemble, and rebuild with new parts like gaskets, seals, springs, syncro gears as long as you’re in there.  However, has it been leaking? Check the fluid level. Maybe a loose cover leaked out too much fluid.  Why even bother? 13,000 should still be under warranty; just take it back-unless you bought used and warranty doesn’t transfer. It won’t hurt to talk to district service manager if you don’t get anywhere with local dealer. Just tell district service manager how you asked a question on the World Wide Web newgroup and how far good will really goes these days. Worst case you’re saddled with the "put-it-in-reverse-and-wait" because that’s better than paying $1000 for a rebuild job.
