Blower fan only comes out "Defrost" vents?

Question:

On my wife’s 2000 Explorer, the blower only blows air through the defrost vents.  The buttons register on the panel when they are pressed but the air never changes it’s path, it won’t come out the "vent" position.  Any ideas? I’d like to think it is an easy fix so I don’t have to bother with taking it to the dealer! Help! Thanks Hutch

It sounds like your system is in a "default" mode, which what happens when your system is not working properly. You said you have push buttons , is it electronic climate control? I am only familiar with the manual climate control like I have in my 99 XLT. Basically when you change direction of the vents, it is controlled by vacuum. But when there a problem with it such as a loose vacuum line, the system will resort to default mode, or the defrost vent. I had a problem with my truck which that when I put on MAX A/C, it would only come out of the defrost vents. Turned out there was a vacuum line that was never hooked up at the factory. It was an easy fix, it was located under the hood right below the alternator You might want to check the multiple vacuum connector that is located behind your glove box. First, open your glove box, then squeeze both sides of it so you can then open it down all the way allowing you access behind it. On the left side you should see a connector which has multiple vacuum lines going into it . See if any are loose.

Response:

Yes, it is the electronic temperature control system.  I looked behind the glove box and all seems secure.  I unplugged one of the wires and there is no vacuum, even when changing the settings.  Under the hood, there is vacuum to the EGR valve.  Where is the main vacuum module, though? Thanks, Hutch

I do not know, not to familiar with the electronic climate control. I do not even know if that type of system works on vacuum, could work on servo-motors. Sorry for my lack of experience. Hopefully someone in this newsgroup can shed some light.

Response:

Check the Black vacuum line at the back of the control head. With the engine running, you should have vacuum at this line. If not, trace it back to the engine, fault could be leaky/plugged line, or leaky/plugged vacuum resoirvoir. If you have vacuum at the EACT module(control head), but no vacuum at any of the other lines when switching modes, the fault is in the control head. > On my wife’s 2000 Explorer, the blower only blows air through the defrost > vents.  The buttons register on the panel when they are pressed but the air > never changes it’s path, it won’t come out the "vent" position.  Any ideas? > I’d like to think it is an easy fix so I don’t have to bother with taking it > to the dealer! > Help! > Thanks > Hutch
