This is most likely a bad multi-function switch. It is known to be problematic part. Better hurry and get it replaced before it starts to affect your headlights and your left in the dark. Scott…. 2000 Explorer XLS w/5 speed || || /

You guys need to find better dealers
I took mine in for the wiper issue, and they confirmed the issue immediately. They had the GEM and switch in stock, and fixed it right away. No more phantom wipers!

Well!! JOIN THE CLUB!!!! It is NOT your imagination and you are NOT going crazy – but you WILL go crazy if you do not nail your dealer to the wall to get them fixed – and they ARE fixable! The best thing for you to do is to do a search in this forum under keywords ‘phantom wipers’ ‘phantom wiper update’ and ‘windshield wipers’ and you will find mucho info on this subject. And…DO NOT TAKE A ‘NO’ ANSWER EVERRR FROM YOUR DEALER. They are just killing time until you go berserk and they have to perform the fix. Greetings to all: I noticed that sometimes when I use the front wipers and then turn it off it won’t go off when put in the OFF position. Yesterday I drove home 20 minutes with the wiper switch OFF but they were working!! Luckily it was raining heh. Anyway the only way to turn them off is the ignition off(thank god) or the fuse for wipers.. This only happens sometimes but everytime I bring it to dealer, it works. What can I do? This may happen about once in 2 weeks and only happens when I use the wipers. So far the wipers haven’t gone on by them selves(crossing my fingers). Sometimes it lasts long like that 20 minute drive home, other times it’s like 30 seconds etc. I’m thinking it’s the hand switch. Did anyone else have this problem? was it the wiper run/stop relay or the actual wiper switch you move with your hand? This is a ‘98 explorer sport with 20K in. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Before you buy.
