MPG for new Explorer V8's ?
Question:
What have 2000 Explorer V8 owners been getting for city/highway gas mileage ? The stickers on new 2000 XLT’s show the same city/highway MPG ratings for the V8 and SOHC V6. This seems hard to beleive. The Expedition initially was stickered with city/highway ratings similar to the Explorer but most owners report getting dismal mileage. Appareciate the input. Thanks. – John
Response:
The feedback on this group is that they are close; I think the V6 SOHC owners get about 1 mpg better. A smaller engine won’t necessarily provide better mileage if it has to work harder than a larger engine. Also, did those vehicles have the same gear ratio, etc.? Damalek ‘97 V8 AWD

I have 2000 Exp Limited AWD, 5.0L Auto with 3.73 rear and just a little over 2,000 miles on it now. Seems to be getting about 14 city and about 17-18 on the road. I figure it is just now getting broken in so won’t expect to get best mileage until about 5K……time will tell. How about others’ experience? — Thank You. Take Care and Have a Good Day. CUL8R, Mike

Response:
Your vehicle is set up like mine (V8, AWD, 3.73). Your mileage is typical. You may get a bit higher on the highway. I’m in the same boat, with a little under 2000 mi on mine. I’ve been averaging about 16 – 17 mi/gal, with a low of 14 – 15 mi/gal and a high of 20 on a 100 mi cruise on country roads averaging about 50 mph. I’ve had a momentary 23 for a few miles when fully warm, new full tank of gas, at 45 mph. I’ve noticed about a 1 – 2 mi/gal difference in the same 20 mile trips if the temperature is near 10 F versus 40 F. So I’m guessing that in the summer time I may get up to 22 mi/gal on the highway after break-in. These numbers are all based on the average mi/gal from the trip computer. I’ve not actually sat down and calculated the values but they appear to be pretty close to correct based on the actual fuel useage between fill-ups and a quick mental calculation.

I have a ‘97 Moutaineer V8 4×2 that has seen as low as 7.6mpg (Don’t ask. I let my father drive it a couple of times, and now I no longer let him drive it because of his heavy foot.) and as high as 25.5mpg. My typical milage though is between 12-14 in the city and 17-19 on the highway with variances due to driving moods, weather, type of road, etc. Jeffrey L. Jue http://www2.msstate.edu/~lj4
