Michelin Cross Terrain tires?

Question:

Absolutely wonderful!  I replaced mine from the FATs on my ‘99,  and there was a world of difference.  First was noise.  There isn’t any, they are very quiiet.  They handle very well too.  I drove from WDC area to Tulsa soon after I got them, and it rained most of the way, both ways.  On several occasions I could feel the difference in grip, even on metal expansion joints, no slip sideways.  I have over 10k on them now and they don’t show any wear, but I haven’t measured them.  There was no Winter here this time so no snow, but I was in Chicago in January when the first storm hit, so I played in it  just to get the feel of the tires.  They lived up to my expectations. Someday in the future, I may have to replace them, but only with the same tire. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Can any one share their experience of buying and using a set of Michelin Cross >Terrain tires on their 1995-2001 Explorer?  Was wondering how they perform in >terms of general handling, ride comfort, road noise, etc. >Secondly, any comments on choosing between the Michelin Cross Terrains versus >the Michelin LTX M/S? >(Typical driving is a mix of city and freeway here in northern CA.)

Response:

Had ‘em for a year now – much better than the Firestone’s.  Wish I’d had ‘em for the 4 years before that.  I noticed an immediate improvement in handling – significantly more responsive that the old tires, really surprised me as I turned out of the tire store onto the road!  As they say "it went where I pointed it" – very noticable, and better, response.

Response:

I’ve had them on my ‘97 EB since 8/01 smooth ride quiter than the Firestones, More car like in handling.  They seem to like wet weather better than any tire I’ve had.

I have had mine on for a little over 10k miles now and only have 1/32 worn off of them. Awesome tires! I would say for your application that they would be a better choice than the LTX M/S (XC LT4-Sears version, same tire) The LTX MS were simply the best tires on the market (my opinoin, and many others too!) and the Cross Terrain’s are 110% the tire of LTX MS. Even in price, that’s how they market it and I believe it’s true, so far anyways.

Strange Sounds – 2001 Explorer Sport Trac

Question:

I have been noticing that while sitting and idling, there is a strange thumping noise in my sporttrac.  It is coming from under the hood and can be heard inside or outside the truck.  Kept saying that I needed to get it looked at, but never had the time to worry about it.  THEN, the other day I am sitting on the highway waiting as highway workers pull a backhoe across the road.  While sitting there, I heard the thump and as soon as I heard it, my truck lunged forward.  Not so bad that I had an accident ir anything, but hard enough that I could feel it pulling.  NOW it has my attention, I go on down the road a bit and didn;t feel it again.  Just before I got home, I stopped again on a long strech of highway that has good visability so people can see me stopped and I can see them and get out of the way.  I stop, sit and idle for a few minutes.  Nothing, just as I am about to release the break and head home, it happens again.  I have an appointment to drop off my truck next week to get it checked out.  Before I go by and let the service guys install little puffs of smoke up my a$$, I thought I would run it by this group and see if anyone had run into it?   Not sure if this is a problem where it dumping fuel, the transmission is doing something, or the breaks are releasing on their own.   Any ideas

RCCL Rhapsody – Nov. 11

We’re on the Rhapsody out of Galveston on Nov. 11th. One stop is Playa del Carmen. (We have been to Cancun several times.) Is this stop just for taking a bus or tour to Cancun? Hi Beth, The stop in Playa del Carmen is strictly for people taking tours from there and is there only long enough to drop them off. I believe the tour was the Tulum Ruins, but there may have been more.  CCL does not give you the option of getting off there if you haven’t purchased an excursion, sorry. I can’t tell you anymore about Playa as I did not go there myself. Nor can I make any recommendations of the ship as I was the Inspiration out of New Orleans. But, according to the brochures I have read, RCL stops there for tour debarkation only as well.  Good luck and enjoy your cruise! Playa del Carmen is a stop to drop off people taking the bus tour to Xcaret, which is a "eco-archeological park".  It’s really amazing, sort of an open-air zoo (moats instead of fences, huge habitats for the animals)/adventure park (you can float through an underground river, go snorkeling, etc)/ museum (Mayan ruins and exhibits).  I highly recommend this trip, as it leaves plenty of time to shop in Cozumel (the bus leaves from Playa del Carmen, but meets up with the ship in Cozumel).  If you go, go to the butterfly garden first (we found it later in the afternoon, but the signs said it is most spectacular in the morning).  It’s a garden area with a fine net for a roof to keep the butterflies in.  Really amazing. Have fun! Amy

dynamat

Question:

Ok…but i still don’t think it’s really necessary to have Dynamat or the equivalent.  For cutting down road noise, i think the good spray of undercoating will not only do the same thing, but protect the undercarriage as well. MY entire system is powered by a Kicker 435ix 4 channel amp for the door speakers and a Soundstream 500s powering a single 10" Kicker Competition sub in a sealed box.  If you’re just replacing speakers and adding a sub, i don’t think stuff like Dynamat is necessary.  If there is something loose and rattling after you install the stuff….look for it if you can and rectify the problem.  The Explorer’s interior seems to hold up pretty well to lots of bass.  I haven’t heard any rattling with or without my system blasting.  hehe.  My Explorer is 6yrs old btw. Auto hubs ???

Do manual hubs ( forgive my ignorance) mean those hubs with the big indented round lever in the middle and you have to stop, get out and turn those to engage them?

Response:

You do need to get out and turn the selector on the hubs from "free" to "lock" before shifting the transfer case. This is not that big of deal as it may at first seem. When I know that I am going to need 4wd on my way to work, I lock my hubs before starting out, and engage the transfer case as needed. The automatic hubs do not disengage the same time you disengage the transfer case, the autos unlock after you back up 3-10 feet. Driving with the hubs locked does put more wear on the front axle, and decrease your mileage some, but is no different than hitting the 4×4 button for 4wd, then hitting it again to come out of 4wd without stopping and backing up. With the automatic hubs, when you are in 4wd, and shift to reverse, the hubs first unlock, then after a few more feet, lock again. The manual hubs are locked all the time so you have no delay in reverse. They also give you the option of being able to have 2wd low by not locking the hubs and shifting into 4×4low. Problems of difficult engagement and disengagement of manuals due to driveline torque, have been just about completely eliminated. Stopping, getting out and locking your hubs is not as big of a hassle that it may seem at first.

Response:

As long as the car was well cared for, you shouldn’t have many problems with the hubs. However, if they start to give problems, change over to manual hubs. Warn hubs are the most popular and probably the most reliable. Ford gets about $286 per auto hub and individual parts like the cam assembly are not available from ford. The cost for a set of Warn’s is about $150-$180 for a set of 2, plus about $40 for the conversion kit you need for the wheel hub lock nut. Converting is no harder than changing a tire, and takes about an hour or so for both sides. (includes beer and smoke breaks) My advice would be to change to manuals, avoid potential problems, because they will surely fail when you need them. ( doesn’t everything?) I brought my ‘94 a year ago, had no problems with the hubs until the first snowfall this year when they went without warning. (no pun intended)

Thanks Dean!  I appreciate the tips.  I do have one particular fishing hole at the bottom of a steep bouldern strewn forest trail that also had several ledge drop of spots.  Years ago as a wide eyed teen, I sit my dads bronco on the gas tank (thank GOD for skid plates LOL)  So it is a bit rough but only for 2-3 hundred yards.  I think i will make a check list of things to begin immediate maintanence on things like oil change, lube the U-joints etc.  I mentioned belts and hoses but the guy just replaced them around 75,000 miles as part of his regular care for the Explorer. Thanks again, I love all the help that seems available from this particular newsgroup. Tony

Response:

Just a few things to keep in mind, you’ll probably do just fine. 1/ "Shift-on-the-fly" is somewhat of a misnomer. Do it too much and you’ll have hub problems. There’s some plastic stuff in some sensitive places in the hubs. Hit the 4WD button at low speeds (<15 or 20 mph) if you can. 2/ The hubs require time-to-time maintenance, mainly cleaning and some grease in the right places. If you’re handy, do it yourself. If not, find a guy who KNOWS these hubs. There are a couple of guys here who have posted instructions. 3/ Have your front axle u-joints checked ASAP. They cause a lot of hub problems by allowing the axles too much play, which apparently wears out something in the hubs. If I were going to do any serious off-roading, I’d get a set of Warn (manual) hubs. If your definition of "off-roading" is like mine (off the PAVED road, onto a gravel road) don’t worry about it. Good luck with your ‘93. It was one of the better years of the earlier Explorers. We had one for 7 years. The members of this NG were very helpful in keeping it in top shape. Dean

2001 Explorer Sport Moonroof Problems

Question:

I just picked up my new 2001 Sport last week, and upon delievery, I found that two of the clips that hold the sun shade that covers the moonroof were broken and just hanging there.  This makes it difficult to open and close the sunshade because it isn’t on it’s track.  I just got back from the service department where they told me they have to replace the whole sunshade.  They ordered the part and I have an appointment for next saturday.  I’m concerned because I do not want them to remove the headliner from the truck, because those things rarely go back together correctly.  The service writer told me they probably don’t have to do that, but one of the "technicians" told me that it is a 3 or 4 hour job to replace the shade. Does anybody know if the headliner actually has to be removed from the vehicle, or can they simply take the glass out of the moonroof and install the sunshade from the top?  Any insight would be appreciated.  Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks, Matt

Response:

> I don’t know, but you bring up an interesting question: > If the headliner needs to be removed, what will you decide?

Interesting…. you can’t really refuse the repair because you think they won’t do a good job. :-)  I had a ‘95 Accord that needed the rear window rubber seal replaced just a week after I took delivery (the original was deformed and I missed it during my inspection). I was very uncomfortable about them removing the rear glass; especially since it would be sent out to a local auto glass company. I even called the glass company directly and they assured me that removing the window was routine and they take steps to prevent scratching  the paint around the window. Result ?  It came back perfectly installed with no marks whatsoever on the vehicle. Wheew !  :-) – John

Yes, it happens when the accellerator magically changes places with the brake pedal… Consider: why would the truck jump forward when pressing on the *brake* pedal? In all likelyhood, your brother hit the accellerator pedal instead of the brake pedal. It happens. THIS IS A SIG LINE: And, no, I *can’t* type worth a darm.

Response:

Did he used to own an Audi?  Call 60 minutes – they would probably like to do another story. He hit the accelerator by mistake.

I was on another auto newsgroup about a year ago (or so), and a lady complained that her Accord did the same thing in an underground parking lot. She pressed the brake pedal, and the car drove forward. The harder she pressed the brake pedal, the faster the car went, bouncing off walls, pillars and other cars. She said she couldn’t (and still didn’t) figure went wrong. I remember the time I was driving my wife’s T-bird. The CC was set, and when I pressed the brake pedal, the car didn’t slow down. I had the presence of mind to turn the CC off, and the brakes worked again. The switch on the brake pedal had come loose; fixing that solved the problem. THIS IS A SIG LINE: And, no, I *can’t* type worth a darm.
