NCPINE, Please describe the noise a little better. Sound, duration, etc.

Makes sense to me. I personally think the problem may lie in either the oil passages being too small or the oil pumps being lame, than the tensioner itself (of course neither of those are cheap to do, since they’d require the engine being removed from the vehicle)… Probably a synthetic oil with a very thin cold viscosity (like -5w20 or something) could "cure" the problem – just locating such a creature won’t be easy. Nope… See the few thousand posts concerning the 4.0 SOHC timing chain rattle. Welcome to owning a 4.0 SOHC. Ford should stick with what they do best – using 30 year outdated technology. When they try to move up to 1980’s technology they fall flat on their face, or attempt to cheapen it beyond all usability. JS
