Opinion on aftermarket mobile entertainment system

Question:

I am interested in installing an aftermarket mobile dvd player/moinotr system on my 2002 Explorer. I am looking at out-of-dash type player because I would only bring the player along when we go on a long road trip with the kids. I would like to get some advice and recommendation with such installation. Thanks in advance Pat

Response:

Depending on how much you want to spend, you can do anything.  I personally like the setup with two screens, one in the back of each headrest.  It gives you more options and the kids or whoever can see it easier.  You also have the option of adding individual controls/listening devices and if you choose later on to add a video game system or get a satellite feed, they both don’t have to watch or do the same thing.  The center console is a good place for the DVD player if you don’t mind giving up the space.  Then a FM modulator gives you the option of either listening to the radio/CD or what ever they are watching on the TV’s. This costs more and you can’t just remove it when you don’t want it in there. Otherwise they have a console all in one removable units, but you need the space between the front seats like most minivans have. You could get a ceiling mounted one but I beleive they installed to stay as well. Thats my 2 cents.  Hope it helps. Joey

2002 Explorer and Child Seats

Question:

Your owners manual should have detailed instructions on proper usage of child seats. The manufacturers have taken great pains to ensure the safety of our children and I would tend to rely more on the printed matter than anecdotal information. — Jim Warman

Makes sense to me.  I personally think the problem may lie in either the oil passages being too small or the oil pumps being lame, than the tensioner itself (of course neither of those are cheap to do, since they’d require the engine being removed from the vehicle)… Probably a synthetic oil with a very thin cold viscosity (like -5w20 or something) could "cure" the problem – just locating such a creature won’t be easy. Rear window wiper problem.

Question:

On a 99 EB Explorer my rear window wiper misses about ten inches in the middle of the window.  I noticed that the wiper arm was some what loose as it joins the tailgate.  The looseness may be normal or is that my problem?  If that is the problem, I assume I take off the plastic trim inside the tailgate to get to the wiper arm motor and so on inside.  Any comments from anyone who has been there?  GCS

Response:

Mine does the same thing 2002 Explorer Sport.  However, in my case I know why.  The vehicle was driven with the rear gate up and it bumped into the garage door.  The arm is slightly bent.  I would rather not say who was driving at the time.

Response:

Mine does as well.  I think it’s a common problem as there’s a service bulletin on the problem.  I’ve got more pressing problems I’m trying to track down, and also trying to find out how to get the full text of these service bulletins.  I’ll let you know if I find anything. –jimbo – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Mine does the same thing 2002 Explorer Sport.  However, in my case I know > why.  The vehicle was driven with the rear gate up and it bumped into the > garage door.  The arm is slightly bent.  I would rather not say who was > driving at the time. > On a 99 EB Explorer my rear window wiper misses about ten inches in the >  middle > of the window.  I noticed that the wiper arm was some what loose as it >  joins > the tailgate.  The looseness may be normal or is that my problem?  If that >  is > the problem, I assume I take off the plastic trim inside the tailgate to >  get to > the wiper arm motor and so on inside.  Any comments from anyone who has >  been > there?  GCS

Response:

Try removing the arm ( lift off the cover and remove nut) and unhook the spring and then make sure the arm pivot is free and not binding in the pivot pin. Oil it up a little and reinstall. That pivot pin can corrode and bind/freeze up. wth

How the side mirror defroster work?

I have a 2002 Explorer Limited, and the side mirrors are supposed to have the defroster feature, but I just can’t figure out to turn it on. Is it turned on by itself? Can anyone help? Pat

When you turn on the rear-window defroster, they come on as well. You’ll love ‘em!

Cargo liner for 2002 Explorer

Question:

Does anyone know of a one piece cargo liner for my 2002 Explorer with the rear seats down? I don"t have a set of third row seats?  Is the 2002 based on a pickup frame? Will any of the pickup bed liners fit? Thanks, Rob

Response:

You might take a look at the Husky product line. I just got a liner for my 2001 Expy that fits great. Shop around some too. Some of the online retailers advertised this liner with prices from 95$ up to 120$. I found mine at a local truck accessory store for 80$ plus tax. Rex

Response:

Hi Rob, I got a WeatherTech for my 02 EB; I have a third row seat, but they sell both kinds.  I’ve been really impressed with the custom fit, and the surface is less slippery than that of the Husky Liner (at the time of my purchase, Husky had not yet released a liner for the new Explorer). Response:

The one I bought for my ‘02 XLT w/o rear seat fit perfectly, but the glued velcro attachment system has somewhat disappointed.  It came with the interior side panel protectors; took a couple of hours to get the fit perfect, but those gluey things aren’t that good.  I forgot if the vinyl one I got was a Husky or Catch-all: it wasn’t cheap; but what I want to point out is that with the rigid liners you’d have to unload your entire truck to get to the spare tire.  At least with the vinyl you can push things out of the way and lift up the tire cover. It’s one of the few times I was bright enough to think things through in advance, and actually benefitted too! Check out your local muffler shops (not Midas…). Usually, they can make what you want for far less than a pre-made setup. And it will often fit better. And you get a larger choice of components.

I changed the oil in my truck today and while i was under the truck i was looking for any grease fittings and could not find any. Are there any on this truck. TIA Steve

So, the idea is to basically kill what little torque your engine puts out?

I think any vehicle with an air bag should have this. My boss is short and has to basically sit right next to the wheel to reach the pedals. I hope she doesn’t have an accident in that car!

2002 Explorer wiring diagrams from Helm

2002 Explorer gas mileage reading in Info center accurate?

Question:

My message center is consistently reading about 6%-8% high.  Not bad, considering that all it knows about gas consumption is probably nothing more than the injector duty cycle (on/off time ratio).  Record the amount of gas required to fill the tank and the mileage since last fill-up.  Do it a few times, and you will be able to ‘calibrate’ your message center MPG reading too.
