Rear window wiper problem.

Question:

On a 99 EB Explorer my rear window wiper misses about ten inches in the middle of the window.  I noticed that the wiper arm was some what loose as it joins the tailgate.  The looseness may be normal or is that my problem?  If that is the problem, I assume I take off the plastic trim inside the tailgate to get to the wiper arm motor and so on inside.  Any comments from anyone who has been there?  GCS

Response:

Mine does the same thing 2002 Explorer Sport.  However, in my case I know why.  The vehicle was driven with the rear gate up and it bumped into the garage door.  The arm is slightly bent.  I would rather not say who was driving at the time.

Mine does as well.  I think it’s a common problem as there’s a service bulletin on the problem.  I’ve got more pressing problems I’m trying to track down, and also trying to find out how to get the full text of these service bulletins.  I’ll let you know if I find anything. –jimbo – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Mine does the same thing 2002 Explorer Sport.  However, in my case I know > why.  The vehicle was driven with the rear gate up and it bumped into the > garage door.  The arm is slightly bent.  I would rather not say who was > driving at the time. > On a 99 EB Explorer my rear window wiper misses about ten inches in the >  middle > of the window.  I noticed that the wiper arm was some what loose as it >  joins > the tailgate.  The looseness may be normal or is that my problem?  If that >  is > the problem, I assume I take off the plastic trim inside the tailgate to >  get to > the wiper arm motor and so on inside.  Any comments from anyone who has >  been > there?  GCS

Response:

Try removing the arm ( lift off the cover and remove nut) and unhook the spring and then make sure the arm pivot is free and not binding in the pivot pin. Oil it up a little and reinstall. That pivot pin can corrode and bind/freeze up. wth
